ABOUT THE TOOL

This guideline kit provides an overview of emerging global pratices & methods in transportation and street design in response to the COVID-19 crisis. It does so in aggregating different fields of action such as outdoor dining, transit stops & lanes, gatherings & events, bike & roll lanes, markets, slow streets, etc. Interventions are clearly visualised by simple street design drawings, which makes it very digestible and easy to understand for the reader. Finally, it lists up some general principles and policies on how to answer to transportation issues arising from the COVID-19 outbreak.

ABOUT THE TOOL

The Neighborhoods Now Toolkit is a very interactive toolkit where the reader can guide him or herself through the wide diversity of design experimentation during pandemic times by using concrete keywords. These keywords then reflect some categories of street interventions of which the toolkit offers concrete hands-on examples in the US. These examples are developed by different working groups, design studios, etc. The cases presented are not necessarily examples of how to do it in the best way, but rather serve as inspiration for getting started yourself. Topics and fields of interventions include: outdoor theatre plans, repurposing vacant lots for arts institutions, building restauration areas, mobile barricade designs, park design, organizing outdoor gatherings, open streets and so on. This is a very enjoyable toolkit!

It can be used by anyone who wants to see their main streets thrive in the short and long term, from residents to city staff and policymakers. So it focuses not only on experimentation during COVID-19, but also on the future. It guides you through the process in a very structured way by firstly identifying ambitions and goals and then providing approaches to effectively reallocate space for people, with a clear focus on rapid placemaking. Lastly, some very concrete interventions are listed up to serve as inspiration to wonderfully transform your own street!

Milan was one of the cities around the world hit hardest in the first phases of the pandemic. However, the city did not only look pessimistically at the crisis, but rather saw this crisis as an unprecedented opportunity to change towards a more sustainable future. During the first months, the city implemented some far-reaching measures that transformed many of Milan’s big avenues. Cycling was been put forward as a key factor to combat the pandemic. Driving lanes were replaced by cycling lanes, parklets came to take over parking spaces, and in many streets a 30km/h limit was introduced. In this strategy brief, the City of Milan summarized some of the most important methods of how to transform streets and the public space. This document gives clear examples and tips and tricks and is essential to a beginners toolkit for tactical urbanism in COVID-19 times.

The Rethinking Streets Book Series offers a special edition on rethinking streets during COVID-19! How can we re-allocate spaces for new uses such as walking, biking and simply just being, by using the pandemic as an opportunity? This guidebook is centered around two essential open questions: 1) what changes will endure post-COVID, and 2) will communities be more open to street reconfigurations, including quick and inexpensive trials, going forward? These questions are answered by providing concrete examples on five fields of intervention: cycling lanes, slow streets, streets for dining, public promenades, and curbs. The mainly United States cases are explained elaborately and accompanied by design plans.

Even though New Zealand has not been hit as hard as many other countries, it still had to face challenges arising from crowding in streets, bus stops and public spaces. The New Zealand Transport Agency, Waka Kotahi, designed a guideline kit to assist councils with responding to this issues and increase the feasibility of walking and cycling. This guideline is built up coherently and relies both on observations carried out by the government as on people from the community reporting specific challenges. It is structured in a way that it clearly answers to the question of maintaining social distancing on public spaces. 1) Which challenges may arise and which streetscapes may entail a risk?, 2) How to plan your response?, and 3) Which types of responses can be implemented and are suited best for the challenge in question?
